There's much to see with the Teaching Pyramid Framework! Learn all there is to know how we teach various social skills and emotional competencies to help children learn to interact with peers and adults within a community.
The Teaching Pyramid Vision: Social-emotional development is foundational for learning and development in young children, and California is committed to promoting and supporting healthy social-emotional development in all of its children
Storybook Village Preschool, a Partner Site program with the California Collaborative on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CA CSEFEL), offers a unique learning environment. Here, rules and expectations are viewed as agreements, fostering a learning environment that encourages children to explore and express themselves. We share our Program-Wide Expectations with families, which become our Agreements. These Expectations are part of a special project we have at Storybook Village Preschool, known as the Teaching Pyramid. The Teaching Pyramid aims to promote healthy social-emotional development and teach children the skills that will help them succeed in school. We also facilitate parent groups to connect families, recognizing that parenting can be challenging and that support networks are invaluable!
At Storybook Village Preschool, we believe that family participation is key to a thriving community. There are numerous opportunities for families to get involved, such as classroom chores/support or outdoor maintenance/creations and gardening. We also schedule Family Work Days, inviting any family member to contribute. By participating, families not only strengthen their bonds but also contribute to a closer community that protects and nurtures our children!
We TEACH! Preschool is where children learn and master social and emotional skills. Our educators guide behaviors and teach pro-social skills through positive relationships, a supportive environment, and effective practices from WestEd's Teaching Pyramid approach. This systematic framework promotes social and emotional development, supports children's appropriate behavior, prevents challenging behavior, and addresses problematic behavior. We teach families how to guide, support, and manage behaviors by learning about our social-emotional supports and resources. Also, families can download our Pro-Social Behavior & Agreement Policy to learn more about how families partner with us when addressing behaviors of concern.
We're in this together! Teaching Pyramid promotes social-emotional development and identifies challenging behavior. It is also designed to support families at home. Check-in with Nicole if you want to join and be part of a support network.
Each program implements a friendship curriculum and strategies to support children's social and emotional competence and prevent challenging behavior. We teach children the desired pro-social skills through positive relationships and a supportive learning environment. We teach the skills to master self-regulation, like deep breathing strategies and a safe space where the children can self-select to tuck away like Tucker Turtle. The soothing items and emotional supports will look different at different ages as a child's self-regulation capacity grows. Still, we know co-regulation through trusting relationships remains an important teaching tool for young children's social and emotional development into young adulthood. That's WHY we focus on teaching these skills in the early years! We ask families to picture a child in their mid-twenties, and what social-emotional qualities, skills, or characteristics will they have?
Each program has developmentally appropriate visual supports to teach pro-social skills and self-regulation in a care setting. We have solution cards and Classroom-wide Expectation visuals in all learning areas! There are a problem-solving area and a cozy area in all three programs.
We teach young children how to manage strong emotions to friendship skills through emotional literacy. Emotional literacy happens through positive interactions with the preschool families checking in with the emotion board. We create social stories and scripted stories to teach children positive behaviors.
We know learning continues outside, so we have created "zones" for supervision and positive interaction. Our outdoor classrooms are intentionally designed to support the children's behaviors, interests, and abilities, including promoting physical activity. The children will be supported with consistent support and predictable routines from the outdoor kitchens to quiet areas.
Our partner site is recognized by CA CSEFEL and accorded a special place in the state-wide effort to support the California Department of Education Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning Foundations.
"The findings indicate that the teaching team is implementing the Teaching Pyramid at defined fidelity and are implementing each Tier of the framework at defined fidelity. They were not using any practices that are contraindicated by this framework (Red Flags). This means that children in this classroom are more likely to exit the program with fewer challenging behaviors and more socially skilled behavior than children who attend classrooms that are not at this level of fidelity to the Teaching Pyramid Framework."
The photo gallery below shares more about our quality practices for teaching young children for preschool, kindergarten, and life readiness!
Young children's close relationships with preschool teachers and caregivers are also important to their development of school readiness. A number of studies have found the warmth and security of the preschool child's relationship with a preschool teacher are predictive of the child's subsequent classroom performance, attentional skills, and social competence in the kindergarten and primary grade classroom.

Through emotional literacy, young children learn how to identify, manage, and respond to emotions--promoting empathy and lifelong friendship skills! Storybook Village Preschool teaches children about emotions through teaching feeling words within our intentionally designed physical and emotional environment! Since Storybook treats the learning environments as “the third teacher,” visual aids and tools for calming emotions and problem-solving are used by both children and teachers to guide Social and Emotional Development. Many emotions are shared at school, which are supported through emotional literacy. Children who are socially competent and emotionally literate can talk about their feelings, regulate their strong emotions, solve their conflicts, and model the language and tools of the Teaching Pyramid.
We are encouraging families to do what we teach the children to do to manage their emotions: Listen to your body, so you know when you need to take a break, take space, breathe (smell the flower, blow out the candle), ask for help, and be kind to others and yourself! Talking to your children about Cononavirus (COVID-19) in age-appropriate and staying calm is not always easy when the world is scary, but you don't have to do it alone.
