Storybook Village Preschool has been hit with almost every natural disaster possible in Sonoma County, California. We have learned that an emergency or disaster will likely disrupt our normal business operations. Planning with families will allow Storybook Village Preschool to keep everyone safe and to provide child care services as soon as possible after a disaster occurs.
On top of keeping our preschool community physically safe, our other priority is to be mindful of providing a positive climate, so emotional safety is fostered. We share amazing community resources with families about how to get through a community crisis, including caring for children after experiencing a traumatic event. Through our positive, secure relationships and healing environment, we will teach young children that when life gets overwhelming or scary, they can learn who to trust to keep them safe. These early life lessons will help raise resilient children!

As a high-quality preschool, we spend time outside every day. As a high-quality preschool operating during a pandemic, we will spend more time in our outdoor classrooms regardless of the season. Ensuring children come to school dressed appropriately and have a supply of backup clothes as school is crucial for our school days' success. This requires a commitment to each parent/guardian to provide and maintain the proper clothing.
Much like the Waldorf education philosophy, the Reggio Emilia philosophy believes that we should “bring the outside in” and let children collect simple and natural toys from the environment. Encouraging children to connect with nature and the outdoor classroom every day is also a core principle of Reggio Emilia.
It is important to remember we teach self-help skills, so clothing must be child friendly. For younger children, families can practice these skills at home for mastery. This is the same concept as potty learning. Our goal is to keep the children dry and comfortable in all seasons. We appreciate our families partnering with us to keep our preschool community healthy, no matter the season.
No matter what's in the air outdoors, we always have love surrounding us with these children! Thank you to the Healthy Apple Program for our yoga mats—the preschoolers loved practicing mindfulness through playful poses. We have physical activity policies such as no screen time at school and outdoor playtimes in the morning and afternoon, regardless of the season.
